MEME – Smart Glasses to Promote Healthy Habits for Knowledge Workers

As people use more and more computing devices, related health risks also increase. Two of the most common and severe issues related to computer work are computer-vision syndrome (eye fatigue, headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision) and a too-steep head flexion angle, often referred to as ”Text-Neck”, which can lead to headaches and in extreme cases to spinal misalignment According to medical research, users should blink often and at regular intervals (2-5 seconds) to prevent eye fatigue and dry eyes. To prevent ”Text Neck”, related work suggests that the user’s head should not have a flexion angle of 19 degrees or lower for over a minute.

J!NS MEME, prototype smart glasses that can sense head and eye movement, is designed to monitor and prevent unhealthy working habits related to both issues. The glasses use a three-point electrode setup to detect eye movements and blinks, and an accelerometer and a gyroscope to monitor head motion.
