Applying Color Theory to Digital Media and Visualization

Sunday, 09 August 2:00 PM - 5:15 PM | Los Angeles Convention Center, Room 153A-C

This course examines the foundations of color theory and how they apply to building effective digital media. It defines color harmony and demonstrates application of color harmony to case studies: ensemble scientific visualizations, historic and new infographics, correlation in biological data, rainbow color deficiency safe examples, and time -eries animations. The features of ColorBrewer, Adobe’s Color app, and Josef Albers “Interaction of Color” app are reviewed and two analysis tools are introduced: “Gamut Mask” and “Color Proportions of an Image”. The course concludes with a hands-on session that teaches how to use online and mobile apps to successfully capture, analyze, and store color schemes for future use in digital media. Please bring small JPEG examples of your visualizations for performing color analyses during the hands-on session.
